Brief History of Unitil
Unitil Corporation (Unitil), a New Hampshire corporation, is a registered public
utility holding company organized on September 7, 1984 and headquartered in Hampton, New Hampshire.
Unitil and its six subsidiary companies provide electric service in New Hampshire, electric and
gas service in Massachusetts and energy services throughout the region. Its subsidiaries are
Unitil Energy Systems (formally Concord Electric Company and Exeter & Hampton Electric Company),
Fitchburg Gas and Electric Light Company, Unitil Power Corp., Unitil Realty Corp., Unitil Resources,
Inc. and Unitil Service Corp. Unitil Corporation was formed in 1984 through a merger of Concord
Electric Company (CECo) and Exeter and Hampton Electric Company (E&H).
Unitil Energy Systems is a combination of Concord Electric Company and
Exeter & Hampton Electric Company. Concord Electric Company (CECo), a New Hampshire corporation organized in 1901, was
an electric utility engaged in the purchase, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity to customers
in Concord, NH and twelve surrounding New Hampshire towns. Exeter & Hampton Electric Company (E&H), a New
Hampshire corporation organized in 1908, was an electric utility engaged in the purchase, transmission,
distribution and sale of electricity to customers in Exeter and Hampton, NH and all, or part, of
sixteen surrounding New Hampshire towns.
In connection with the formation of Unitil in 1984, also formed were Unitil Power Corp.,
(Unitil Power) as the wholesale supplier of electricity for Unitil Energy Systems, and Unitil Service Corp.,
(Unitil Service) to provide various administrative and management services to its affiliates. Unitil
Realty Corp. (Unitil Realty) was organized in 1986 to acquire real estate to support Unitil’s growth and
expansion. Unitil Resources, Inc. (Unitil Resources) was organized in 1993 to provide power marketing,
generation management, financial, accounting, power procurement services and power brokering. In 1999,
Unitil Resources introduced Usource, an Internet-based auction for energy service.
In 1992, Fitchburg Gas and Electric Light Company (FG&E), a Massachusetts corporation organized in 1852, merged with Unitil and became one of Unitil’s distribution companies providing electric and natural gas service to north central Massachusetts. FG&E was originally organized to provide natural gas to illuminate the gas lights in downtown Fitchburg, and expanded over the years to include natural gas and electric services to retail customers in Fitchburg and a number of surrounding communities.
