Unitil Files Electric Rate Changes in Massachusetts
Hampton, NH - (April 24, 2006): Unitil Corporation (AMEX:UTL) announced today that its Massachusetts
subsidiary filed changes in its Basic Service energy prices and Transition Service Charge with the
Massachusetts Department of Telecommunications and Energy ("M.D.T.E."). These changes are expected
to take effect June 1, 2006.
A typical residential customer using 500 kWh per month will see their bill decrease from $102.36
to $98.49, or 3.8%. Other customers will see decreases ranging from 0.4% - 4.5%, based on rate
class and usage. The small number of customers who have contracted with a Competitive Supplier
and do not take Basic Service will see overall bill increases in the range of 2.4% - 3.6% due to
the change in the Transition Service Charge.
Basic Service is provided to customers who do not have their own retail competitive electricity
supply. This service is procured through a competitive bid process and the resulting prices are
passed through to customers without profit or mark up from the local distribution company. Basic
Service prices change for residential and small to medium business customers every six months and
every three months for large business customers. Transition Service Charges recover costs
associated with electric industry restructuring. The filed Transition Service Charge has
previously been approved by the M.D.T.E. to take effect June 1, 2006.
