We all want strong, successful communities. Unitil has a long-standing corporate commitment to serve the towns and cities we work in to help improve the overall quality of life. We give back in a variety of ways including, but not limited to donations, sponsorships, scholarships and volunteerism. Our goal is to help our communities be good places to live and work, as well as places where people and businesses choose to locate to prosper and to grow.

Unitil is constantly searching for new ways to partner with local non-profit human service organizations in support of improving the quality of life for our neighbors. One of our longest and strongest partnerships to this end is through the United Way, where we donate both our time and resources both as a company and as individual employees. Through the United Way, Unitil supports vital community initiatives such as early childhood education, affordable housing, healthcare and assistance for the homeless. Be it through volunteerism, our annual company drive or through corporate donations, Unitil goes the extra mile to support the organizations which offer the human services which support us all.
We also support the Red Cross and other non-profit groups who are there for the community in times of crisis. As an emergency response organization, Unitil seeks out the people and organizations who are also there at times when need is the greatest. If there is a chance for us to work with you to help keep local residents safe or to lend a hand when trouble arises, we welcome the opportunity. Our robust partnership with the Red Cross includes training, public safety media outreach and support of the Red Cross’s annual Heroes Awards and holiday campaign.
The company's corporate giving program strives to meet community needs within the cities and towns it serves. In an effort to "give back" to the very communities that determine its success, Unitil targets corporate contributions to educational programs.
We use and maintain a wide assortment of crucial, highly expensive pieces of equipment in order to provide for energy safely and reliably, but our most valuable asset will always be our people. Our employees are passionate about their work and the communities they serve and many began their career thanks to a strong foundation in math or science. By supporting outstanding students, teachers and innovative educational programs, Unitil is investing in not only its own future, but all of our futures.
On top of our corporate donations, employees at each of our regional affiliates meet regularly to discuss possible local donations which fit with our partnership goals. These donations, which range from $100 to $500, are an opportunity for our staff to support local endeavors alongside our larger corporate commitments.
The nature of Unitil’s business offers us a unique opportunity to provide in-kind assistance. Our bucket trucks are often in demand for putting up poles, or hanging banners or holiday lighting. We also give away our used computers and telephone equipment and have even donated a fish tank to a local science center.
We assist at blood drives, offer technical expertise and serve on local boards and committees. We also host community events at our facilities, and recently offered spare office space to the United Way of North Central Massachusetts.
Our employees are the heart of our organization, and their volunteer efforts are the heart of our community development program. In some cases, employees dedicate personal time to a cause that began as an in-kind contribution. Unitil supports these efforts with a Community Service Benefit, which allows employees to spend eight hours a year in community service during regular work hours at full pay.
Employees have responded in a variety of different ways...including volunteering in the public schools, developing school/business partnerships, participating on not-for-profit boards of directors, and running fund-raising drives that respond to local needs.
Employee dedication and active involvement, together with the company's corporate-giving effort, reflect our commitment to the cities and towns we serve. These efforts help us build strong relationships within these same communities as well.
We are happy to again be offering additional scholarships for high school students. Six high school seniors from our service territories in New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts who are pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, or math will each receive $5,000 for their first year of undergraduate study.
